Medicine Buddha
The Buddha of Healing

Learn to draw the Buddha of Healing according to the Tibetan Buddhist tradition!

The original Medicine Buddha Course at Pratt Institute NYC will now be offered through Zoom on May 30+31st, 2020, from 10AM-5PM (EST / NYC Time)

To ensure the same in-depth experience as you would get in the onsite workshop Carmen will offer the same structure, with a clear meditations, lecture, instruction videos and of course her undivided time and guidance, in order for you to create your beautiful Medicine Buddha.
Included in this course is a package worth of $50 with all the materials that you need for this course, so you don’t have to buy art materials, paper, or print anything out.

NOTE that Registration for this course ends on May 10th., so Carmen has enough time to prepare and send out the material packs from Europe (as it could take up to 2 weeks to get to the US).

REGISTER BELOW

During this online weekend course (organized by Pratt Institute Manhattan), you will learn how to draw the Medicine Buddha according to the Tibetan Buddhist tradition.

The Medicine Buddha (Tib.: Sangye Menla) is the embodiment of all healing activities of the Buddhas, which are associated with healing both physical and mental suffering.

His deep blue color is that of lapis lazuli. Traditionally this precious stone was used to symbolize what was purely rare. In addition, this deep blue light has a healing effect when you work with it through visualization meditations (which we will also do this weekend).

In his left hand the Medicine Buddha holds a begging bowl filled with medicinal nectar and fruit. In his right hand he holds the Myrobalan plant, known as the ‘King of Healing’, which is known for its effectiveness in treating both mental and physical diseases.

Drawing an enlightened image like this Buddha is a meditation in itself and creates inner calmness and joy.

Through a combination of drawing, lectures and meditations, this weekend you will learn all about the backgrounds and symbolism of Medicine Buddha, and experience the meditational way of  thangka drawing.
You will also learn the meaning of Medicine Buddha’s Mantra and learn how to work with it. Through this you will not only make a connection with the Medicine Buddha, it also give you drawing so much more depth.
If you are a Buddhist practitioner, drawing this Buddha image significantly improves visualization in your meditations.

NOTE:

You don’t need to have drawing experience, but if this is your first thangka course, it is very advisable to take the Buddha Face Workshop on May 7   as a preparation. NOTE: When you attend both courses, a Material Pack with all materials needed for both courses will be sent to you, but please allow 9-14 days for it to reach you (from Europe to US)

Advanced thangka students who have already drawn/painted the Medicine Buddha in one of Carmen’s previous courses may choose a different subject: the 8 Medicine Buddhas or Buddha Shakyamuni & the Aura of Six Perfections. If you want this please contact Carmen beforehand so she can prepare this for you.

NYC – Day workshop
Healing Plants

in the Tibetan Tradition

In this meditative workshop you will learn how to draw & color different healing plants and herbs in the Tibetan tradition.

When the Buddha transformed himself into the Medicine Buddha, the Buddha of Healing, he laid the foundation for Tibetan Medicine in the form of the so-called Four Medical Tantras (physiology, diagnosis, pathology and healing), where balance in both body and mind is the ultimate goal.

Through a combination of meditation, lecture and drawing sessions, in this 5hr workshop you will learn about some of the most used medicinal plants and herbs in Tibetan Medicine, the illnesses they are used for and learn how to draw them.

REQUIREMENTS: none
This workshop is suitable for anyone, including beginners without any drawing experience.
This workshop can be joined separately, but is a beautiful addition to the Medicine Buddha Thangka Weekend Course May 8-10, 2020 (at Pratt Manhattan), a few days earlier. When joining both you may want to put these medicinal plants into your Medicine Buddha drawing.

ADVANCED STUDENTS: Thangka students who have already drawn/painted Medicinal Plants in a previous course with Carmen may opt for the Emblem of Manjushri instead. Manjushri, the Buddha of Wisdom, is the subject of the May 15-17 Thangka Weekend Course in the same venue. If you prefer this, please contact Carmen soon after you registered, so she can prepare this for you. Advanced students are also welcome to complete their other thangka artwork during this workshop.

This lecture will be free for those who sign up for the subsequent thangka weekend course where you’ll learn to draw Milarepa according to the Tibetan tradition
.

Yogi, Mystic and Poet
Born in southwest Tibet near the Nepalese border, Milarepa (1052-1135 CE) is considered the most famous tantric yogi and mysticHe is remembered for his remarkable determination and personal growth. His inspiring story traces the very familiar, human progression from confusion to clarity. He is generally considered one of Tibet’s most famous yogis and spiritual poets, whose teachings are known among several schools of Tibetan Buddhism.

At age seven, Milarepa’s father died, and he and his mother were cruelly treated by his uncle who was after the family property. In order to take revenge, Milarepa became an apprentice to a magician, and by practicing black magic, he not only caused the death of his uncle but also destroyed many other lives. Tormented by guilt and remorse, he set out in search of insight, but the teacher he found -the famous Marpa- ruthlessly subjected him to one severe test after another until all his negative karma was purified.

As a great tantric yogi, Milarepa achieved many spiritual realizations and eventually attained full enlightenment. He is also praised for the songs and poems he left behind.

Lecture + Drawing the Face of the Buddha

June 20, 2025 | 6-9PM | Tibet House | NYC

buddha-face-workshop-carmen-mensink

A beautiful evening with renowned thangka painter Carmen Mensink from The Netherlands, where after her lecture on the art of thangka you’ll get to experience it hands-on by learning how to draw the Face of the Buddha according to the Tibetan Buddhist tradition.

This evening offers a great introduction on Tibetan thangka painting (Buddhist scroll paintings): through the lecture you’ll learn about the tradition of thangka art, how it came into existence, and the special place it holds within the Tibetan buddhist philosophy.

Drawing the Face of the Buddha the way it has been done for centuries is a meditative experience. If you’re a buddhist practitioner, drawing a Buddha is also a great help for your visualization meditation. The symbolism found within the Buddha Face will also be explained.

This evening is suitable for everyone, including beginners with no drawing experience whatsoever; Carmen will guide you individually.

The use of materials is included!

This is the first of three days Carmen Mensink teaches at Tibet House this year

Milarepa

Tibetan Yogi, Mystic and Poet
Thangka Drawing Course
Tibet House | NYC

During this weekend workshop in Manhattan -with renowned thangka painter Carmen Mensink from The Netherlands- you will learn to draw (and perhaps later paint) this inspiring yogi according to the tradition of thangka (Tibetan scroll paintings).

A True Inspiration
Milarepa (1052-1135), was a tantric yogi and mystic. He is known for his remarkable determination and personal growth, and his inspiring story describes the familiar human progression from confusion to clarity.
Milarepa is often illustrated as an ascetic in a meditation cave, with his right hand behind his ear. This ‘listening’ posture symbolizes his way of teaching the dharma through songs and poems.

Transformation
Milarepa’s early life was characterized by extreme suffering, which was reflected in the terrible negative actions he performed at a young age.
When he realized what he had done, Milarepa saw the light and -tormented by guilt and remorse- set out in search of insight and a teacher, which he found in the famous Marpa. Marpa relentlessly subjected him to one severe test after another, and taught him how to use his fierce and tenacious nature to transform his mind.

As a great tantric yogi, Milarepa achieved many spiritual experiences and eventually full enlightenment. His songs and poems on realization became famous.

In addition to the drawing sessions, you will learn everything about Milarepa’s life, his iconography and meaning through the included online lecture that is offered on June 19 (but can be watched within a week). You will also learn his mantra and how to work with it.

For whom?
This workshop is suitable from beginner to advanced thangka students. Carmen guides students each on their own level and brings them to a higher one.

Prerequisite: Buddha Face Workshop
If this is your first thangka course with Carmen you will need to traditionally have learned to draw Face of the Buddha before you start on Milarepa.
This can be done either Online at the School for Tibetan Buddhist Art, or Onsite
at Tibet House on the evening before

…Thangka drawing and painting is a meditation in itself, and creates inner calm and joy, and in this weekend you will definitely experience that!

Drawing and painting Buddhas of Compassion

In this retreat guided by Carmen Mensink, a renowned painter of thangkas; the traditional Tibetan scroll paintings of Buddhas and mandalas, you’ll learn how to traditionally draw (or paint) a Buddha, by using the ancient grid proportions of Carmen’s thangka lineage as a helpful tool.

In this retreat you’ll learn different colored pencil techniques and are also welcome to work with other materials such as watercolor, pastels, or paints. In addition to the art sessions you’ll discover the background, symbolism, and mantras of these Buddhas, and enjoy guided meditations.

When Buddhism traveled from India to other countries in Asia, its deities traveled along as well.
This way, Avalokiteshvara (the Indian Bodhisattva of Compassion) became known in other countries under a different name, and through the centuries slowly changed form.

The two most famous manifestations of compassion became Guan Yin and Chenrezig, and in this retreat you can choose either one of them to draw (and maybe paint) as your subject:

Guan Yin
Guan Yin became famous in China, Korea and Japan, but is now famous all over the world. Over the centuries this deity slowly changed from a male into a female form, a fascinating story that you’ll learn all about in this course. In this retreat we will draw the female Guan Yin in the most common forms; the standing and seated Guan Yin.

Chenrezig

Chenrezig is the most well-known Buddha of Compassion and is the patron saint of Tibet. His mantra Om Mani Padme Hum is recited by people all over the world. In this retreat you will learn to draw his most common form, the Four-Armed-Chenrezig.

Suitable for everyone
Through her inspired approach and guidance, Carmen helps to bring out the best in each student, and makes this retreat
suitable for students of all levels, from absolute beginners to advanced.

Drawing experience is not necessary. New students will first learn the basics by drawing a Buddha Face before continuing with this week’s subject. The Buddha Face course can also be taken beforehand, online at Carmen’s School for Tibetan Buddhist Art (this will save you time at Arts Week so you can immediately start with Chenrezig or Guan Yin).

You will return home with your own beautiful artwork(s).

NOTE: more advanced thangka students who want to create Amoghapasha, the Eight-armed or Thousand-armed Chenrezig, or need the specific list of supplies to paint a traditional thangka can contact Carmen directly by sending an email

Choose between a 6- and an 8-day Retreat

  • In the 6-day retreat (June 29-July 4) you’ll be able to draw your subject, discover its symbolism and learn the coloring techniques
  • The 8-day retreat (June 29-July 6) will in addition teach you the traditional painting techniques, the possibility to start painting your subject, and in general will give you an even more in-depth experience

If you want to create meaningful art in a meditative setting -and a joyful experience that lasts much longer than the course itself!- this is the retreat for you.

Manjushri by Graham Dyer

Manjushri
The Buddha of
Infinite Wisdom

Or The Buddha for beginner students (see feat. box)

Oct 6/7/8 / Shantideva Center / NYC

This weekend you will learn how to draw the beautiful Manjushri (Tib.: Jampel-yang), according to the Tibetan Buddhist tradition or thangka (scroll paintings).

Manjushri embodies the wisdom of all the Buddhas, and therefore the attributes that he holds in his hands are an expression of this enlightened wisdom.

In his left hand he holds a lotus flower that supports the ‘Perfection of Wisdom-Sutra‘, an important Mahayana- text that reveals the methods for developing and achieving the ultimate wisdom in yourself.

In his right hand he holds a flaming sword, symbolizing the power of his wisdom to cut through the core of all our illusions, namely: ignorance. Because of our ignorance we experience all the problems in this life.

It is said that studying the Wisdom-Sutras and meditating on Manjushri are the two most powerful ways to develop wisdom in yourself.

In addition to drawing this special deity, this weekend course you will also learn all about the backgrounds and symbolism of Manjushri
through presentations and lectures. In the mornings we will start with a guided meditation, and you will learn the meanings of Manjushri’s mantra and how to work with it.

Thangka-drawing is a meditation in itself, and creates joy and inner peace.
Buddhist lamas say “When you draw a Buddha, you draw your own mind.”
If you are a Buddhist practitioner, drawing a Buddha can greatly be of benefit to your visualization meditation.

Beginners are welcome! Prerequisite: the Buddha Face course Online or Onsite (in NYC on Oct 5)
Note that this subject of Manjushri is more suitable for intermediate to advanced thangka students. Beginner students are welcome to join and learn to draw The Buddha (Shakyamuni, the Historical Buddha of our time) this weekend. The requirement for a complete Buddha is this is that you’ve learned the basics through the Drawing the Buddha Face workshop on Oct 5 / Tibet House NYC / Drawing the Buddha Face. Alternatively you can take the Buddha Face Course anytime beforehand Online at the School for Tibetan Buddhist Art.

The Medicine Buddha (Tib.: Sangye Menla) is the embodiment of all healing activities of the Buddhas, which are associated with healing both physical and mental suffering.

Through a combination of drawing, lectures and meditations, you will learn all about the backgrounds and symbolism of Medicine Buddha, and experience the meditational way of  thangka drawing. His deep blue light has a healing effect when you work with it through the guided visualization meditations which are included in the course. You will also work with his mantra and learn the meaning of it.

Voorkeuren-Formulier Thangka Zomerretraite

1) Tekenen of Schilderen?

  • Potlood HB (of vulpotlood 0,5 mm)
  • Lange liniaal (40-50cm) en evt. een geodriehoek
  • Gum
Caran d’Ache Luminance of Faber Castell Polychromos.

 Tijden

Eerste dag:

  • 17.00 (of later) Arriveren
  • 18.30 Soep- Broodmaaltijd

Woensdagmiddag is vrij.

  • pantoffels of dikke sokken
  • opschrijfboekje en pen
  • Evt.

Preferences Form Thangka Summer Retreat 23-30 July 2022

So nice that you’re coming to the Thangka Summer Retreat!

Here you’ll find everything you need: think about what you want to do this week, specify your preferences, and check the latest info:

1) Drawing or Painting?
Would you prefer to have immediate results in this Summer Retreat? Then stick to drawing.
I advise new people, or if you haven’t started thangka drawing for a long time, to stick with drawing for a while first.
This way you can train your hand well and first learn to get a feeling for shadow techniques in black-and-white and/or colored pencils.

That does not mean that you are not allowed to paint as a newcomer, that is fine, but I want to make it clear that painting a thangka is often a long and difficult process (think at least a year before you finish a thangka, that is if you work on it regularly), which can make it too overwhelming, especially as a beginner; I have seen this happen several times. It would be a pity if your thangka ended up in a closet, having spent a lot of money on paint, brushes and other materials.

If you are in doubt whether thangka painting is something for you, I would recommend using this week to do some painting experiments in addition to drawing, for example on a (fine) canvas board or painter’s cardboard that you can bring along. We’ll cover the thangka painting techniques in the second half of this week.

Drawing Materials
A Package with drawing materials for beginners can be ordered (see form), but you can also bring your own:

  • 2 sheets of sturdy drawing paper 50×65/70cm, preferably at least 200gr (easiest to transport in a tube or folder)
  • Pencil HB (or mechanical pencil 0.5 mm)
  • Long ruler (40-50cm) and possibly a triangle
  • Eraser
  • Optional: Colored pencils of a good brand, eg Bruynzeel Design (also for sale on site). Other good brands are for exampl, Caran d’Ache Luminance or Faber Castell Polychromos. You can also use watercolor pencils for a mix between drawing and painting.
  • Optional: colored fineliners and/or other materials that you like to work with. Most materials are also for sale on site in Carmen’s Shop.

Wednesday afternoon is free.

Note: To keep the costs of this course low, we ask you to do a ‘karma yoga task’ every day (e.g. washing dishes together or making coffee/tea)

Other things to bring and think about

In addition to the drawing and/or painting materials that you will be using, it is useful to bring:

  • slippers or thick socks
  • notebook and pen
  • possibly (daylight) lamp and extension cord
  • possibly walking shoes (there are beautiful walks in the area)
  • possibly swimwear (there is an outdoor swimming pool opposite)

Besides the hard work, there is also a lot of fun this week!
These retreats are characterized by the pleasant atmosphere and the nice group of people, whom you quickly get to know.
If you want to bring or share something, you are most welcome to do so!
For example, if you play guitar or another instrument please bring it, we may sing songs together. Also, a woman who brought her singing bowls offered to give a sound concert.
And if for ex. you do yoga every morning, it might be nice to offer others the opportunity to participate.

In the middle of the week we have half a day off, where you can for ex. go for a long walk, visit the nearby care farm or the old paper factory, or take a ride on the old steam train. Information about this will be provided.

And finally: during the course there are drawing and painting materials, thangka cards, Tibetan/Nepalese jewelry and other things for sale at Carmen’s Shop.
Preferably to be paid in cash (which also comes handy when you want to purchase extra drinks or snacks from the center).
