The Rubin Museum of Art is closed On Oct 6th, the Rubin Museum of Art in NYC closed its physical doors after twenty years. I’m incredibly sad about it. Today is the last day of the Rubin Museum of Art in NYC, the ‘Best museum on Himalayan art!’ as I always tell my students. It’s incredibly sad that they are closing. What happens to the Rubin Museum’s collection? And I was happy to learn that the beloved shrine room has found a new, permanent home! The Shrine Room will go to the Brooklyn Museum.

Did you Win the Happy Losar Competition? 🎉 My Personal Travel Tips for Tuscany 🇮🇹
Dear Reader, Hope you enjoyed the Tibetan New Year celebrations online or with your sangha! In this email I’m letting you know who won the competitions that were in the Happy Losar 2024 Gift Pack. As a lover of Italy I’m also sharing with you my favorite places in Tuscany, that you could combine with the Thangka Art Retreat that I’ll be offering there in April. Ciao ciao for now, A few spaces left for the April 12-19, 2024, near Florence Retreat is offered in English, translations can be provided on request.
Join me for a wonderful trip in drawing and painting Buddhas and Mandalas on an amazing location (see pics above) near Florence. Suitable for everybody from beginners to advanced. All lodging and meals included.
My personal favorites ❤️ to combine the Thangka Art Retreat with other places in Tuscany: Visiting Italy for the Thangka Art Retreat itself is more than worth it of course, but if you have some extra days to spend before or after the retreat I would love to share a few of my personal favorite spots with you, each of which are super easy to reach by public transport: 1) Florence
Florence is just a short, direct bus ride from the Thangka Retreat location. If you don’t have time to visit Florence before or after the retreat, you can do that with me during our time off during the course.
THE BEST museum in Florence is the Uffizi Museum, not to be missed during your visit as it home of ALL of your favorite famous paintings from Italian masters such as Botticelli, Leonardo Da Vinci, Titian, Bronzino, Raphael, Caravaggio and Michelangelo to name a few. During the Thangka Retreat, on Tue Apr 16th, there’s time off to visit Florence (and the Uffizi museum) with me, or to explore other parts of Tuscany by yourself or with other students. 2) Lucca This small city is known for the well-preserved Renaissance walls encircling its historic city center and its cobblestone streets, and its distinct oval shaped piazza:
The great opera composer Puccini was born here too, and you can visit his house that’s now a museum. Siena was one of the most important cities in medieval Europe, and its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which contains several buildings from the 13th and 14th centuries. The city is famous for its cuisine, art, museums, and medieval cityscape and its famous Piazza del Campo:
From both Florence and Siena you can make a day trip to the villages of Volterra and San Gimignano:
Volterra is famous for its Etruscan origins from the thirteenth-century and for the many remains belonging to this era. With its double walls, it’s a medieval-looking city, where you can still enjoy the atmosphere of a historic village. It’s also known for the manufacture of alabaster.
San Gimignano is the epitome of a Tuscan hill town. About 40km / 25 miles from both Florence and Siena, San Gimignano is beloved because of its skyline of medieval towers.
Winners of the Happy Losar 2024 competitions 🎉 Winner of the Buddha Face Thangka Art Course Winner of the Medicine Notebook + accessories pack Both winners were personally informed about it last week.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s Wish: A 9,5 meter high (31ft) Amoghapasha painting on a cliff in Nepal 🙏🏼

Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s Wish:
A large, 9,5m (31ft) Amoghapasha painting on a high cliff in Nepal
The following story and pictures come from the FPMT website and I wanted to share it with you as it’s such a special project and great accomplishment, and was recently finished.
|
|
Twenty-five years ago, Lama Zopa Rinpoche began expressing the wish for a large painting of Chenrezig (the Bodhisattva of Compassion) to be painted on a 100-foot high cliff named Drak Karma above Lawudo in Nepal, approximately 4,200 meters above sea level (over 13,000 feet) so everyone in proximity could see it.
In the last few years Rinpoche specifically said for the painting to be of Amoghapasha – an emanation of Chenrezig.
|
|
With huge rejoicing, we share that this 31-foot high by 21-foot wide (9.5 meters high by 6.4 meters wide) painting is now complete! It has been painted directly on the cliff face overseeing the whole area.
|
|
Funds for this project were raised by the Thamichowa community;
Anila Ngawang Samten (Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s sister) provided all the necessary materials and tools needed for painting; and Ven. Nyima Tashi, Ven. Thubten Tendar, and Pasang Dekyi helped to actualize this incredible project.
|
|
As one can imagine, this was an incredible feat, an unbelievable task to complete. The whole project started a couple of months ago and it took ten days to get the scaffolding up to the site where the conditions were freezing and windy making the scaffolding and painting quite dangerous.
The actual painting took seven days by Nepali artists, finished the day before Lhabab Duchen, and consecrated on the day of this merit-multiplying occasion.
Video
Watch the 6min video by Ven. Tenzin Michael of the incredible Amoghapasha painted on a more than 30 meters (over 100 feet) high cliff named Drak Karma above Lawudo in Nepal, where the painters had a hard time painting it in the cold and wind at such high altitude:
The many benefits of Amoghapasha
Lama Zopa Rinpoche:
“Just by seeing this holy body one time, you collect inconceivable merit.
If you continually see this holy body, there is no question of turning back from enlightenment. You achieve the peerless happiness of buddhahood with the cessation of all obscurations and the completion of all realizations.”
Rinpoche encouraged students to have an image of Amoghapasha printed and displayed publicly due to the benefit.
Thangka Course on Amoghapasha
As the connection with Amoghapasha becomes even stronger when you draw/paint an image of him yourself, I decided that this could be the only subject for my next Thangka Course at Maitreya Instituut, the FPMT Center in The Netherlands.
By drawing Amoghapasha (or Avalokiteshvara / Chenrezig) in this course in March we will also honor Lama Zopa Rinpoche, who by then has passed away for almost a year.

My recent course was all about Offerings and Offering Goddesses in the Tibetan Buddhist Tradition.
Students drew these beautiful goddesses in their different positions -flying, dancing and sitting amidst the clouds in the sky- and learned how to work with them in during the meditations and
In addition amazing mandala flower offerings were made -thank you Susie for making this possible!- for the altars in the gompa (meditation hall).

Important and sad news about Lama Zopa Rinpoche
Dear all,
Herewith I share the news from FPMT (Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition) that has just reached me, for those of you who are (and are not) familiar with Lama Zopa Rinpoche:
|
|
Dear Friends,
Our precious guru is sitting in meditation at Kopan Monastery.
Rinpoche had been up in the mountains in the Tsum Valley since Monday, and had to be brought down urgently as Rinpoche was experiencing altitude sickness.
On arrival back in Kathmandu this morning, Rinpoche stopped breathing. The main doctor at Karuna Hospital tried for some time to revive Rinpoche, but that was not successful. Rinpoche entered meditation at about 9.30am Nepal time, today Thursday April 13th.
His Holiness has been informed, and is giving advice.
The lama gyupas and monks are taking turns in sessions offering Cittamani Tara with Rinpoche, as advised by His Holiness. Other pujas and prayers are being offered here in Kopan.
Khadro-la has advised that this is a most important and precious time for students. Khadro-la went on to advise that the best thing for the students to do at this time is to practice bodhicitta in particular, as well as impermanence in the context of the lamrim, and then also as much as one can to help fulfil the guru’s holy wishes.
Khadro-la insisted that we should take this opportunity to try to achieve all or some of the lamrim in our own practice. Meditating and praying to the guru to receive his blessings and guidance is very important. And to try as much as possible to complete Rinpoche’s projects and holy wishes, so already to generate that wish that we’ll be able to do that.
Please pray and dedicate for Rinpoche to be reborn as quickly as possible in a place where he can be very quickly recognized and be of most benefit to sentient beings.
Please keep trying to fulfil Rinpoche’s holy wishes, especially to practice impermanence and bodhicitta in the context of the lamrim. Fulfilling the gurus’ holy wishes is a very important part of inviting the guru to return.
As you know, Rinpoche was the embodiment of bodhicitta, and always stressed the importance of remembering impermanence, and the essential need to put the teachings into practice. This is what we can do for our precious guru now – please try to follow Rinpoche’s heart advice. We can all connect with the guru and receive the guru’s blessings in this way – NOW is a very important time for this.
We will be sending out further updates regularly.
Our hearts are breaking, we take all our support from Rinpoche’s teachings, and the guidance of His Holiness and our teachers, and in our FPMT family.
Big love.
On behalf of Ven Roger Kunsang

Offerande-Godinnen
do 23 t/m zo 26 nov. 2023
Inclusief overnachtingen en alle maaltijden
Offerandes

Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s Wish: A 9,5 meter high (31ft) Amoghapasha painting on a cliff in Nepal
Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s Wish: A large, 9,5m (31ft) Amoghapasha painting on a high cliff in Nepal The following story and pictures come from the FPMT website and I wanted to share it with you as it’s such a special project and great accomplishment, and was recently finished.
Funds for this project were raised by the Thamichowa community; Anila Ngawang Samten (Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s sister) provided all the necessary materials and tools needed for painting; and Ven.
Video Watch the 6min video by Ven.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche: “Just by seeing this holy body one time, you collect inconceivable merit.
Thangka Course on Amoghapasha As the connection with Amoghapasha becomes even stronger when you draw/paint an image of him yourself, I decided that this could be the only subject for my next Thangka Course at Maitreya Instituut, the FPMT Center in The Netherlands.
By drawing Amoghapasha (or Avalokiteshvara / Chenrezig) in this course in March we will also honor Lama Zopa Rinpoche, who by then has passed away for almost a year.

Check out the pics!
