“I spent three full days with my thangka-teacher Carmen – and to me it was like being in a retreat – meditating, listening, drawing, colouring, contemplating and dedicating.

Not only is Carmen a beautiful person, she is also a wonderful and experienced teacher. When she teaches, she does it with such lightness and humor, deep seriosity and sweet kindness …. that one immediately feels at home and in good hands.

I discovered, that thangka-drawing is both challenging and very difficult – and yet I made images, that I had never imagined I was able to make…. in just three days.We are lucky to have such an experienced and good thangka-teacher in Europe.”

“I study Fine Art and am inspired by Tibetan Buddhism. So, I thought that learning to make Thangka was for me an excellent way of combining both interests. I always felt Thangka radiates fine energy, so I wanted to have it in my own room, too.

I came for private teachings instead of a regular course because I thought it would be useful to have one to one, tailor made lessons at the beginning, to get to know the basics in an intensive way.

I thoroughly enjoyed the lessons. With a slideshow, Carmen gave me an extensive explanation about the art of Thangka, Tibetan culture, and Buddhism with many beautiful photos and images. Deepening the understanding of Tibetan Buddhism from visual perspectives was very new and inspiring to me. With her instructions, I could fully attend to the setting up the grids and drew the Buddha – it was a meditative, peaceful, and satisfying experience to me.

Carmen teaches in a very clear, articulate way. She is very friendly, so I quickly felt free to ask her any questions. The workshop space is very welcoming and nicely decorated. She also served me a delightful plate of many different kind of confectionaries. I enjoyed the looks and tastes of them. ”

Painting of a large Green Tara Statue

This big buddha statue of Green Tara lives in Centro Taracittamani in the city of Padova, Northern Italy. It’s a gorgeous statue that sits on the main altar in the gompa (meditation room), so she’s very important.

The statue came already painted, but it was done in a very flat way, not serving her features and her crown well.

painted-face-of-green-tara-statuegreen-tara-statue-lifesize-painted-by-carmen-mensink

Carmen was asked to give her some more depth and character, especially in the face.

Tara’s golden crown is decorated with jewels and lotus flowers, with in the center a small red Amitabha Buddha, as he’s her ‘spiritual father.’

As the statue is so big, she worked on it many times, always in the days before or after the thangka classes that she taught in the same Buddhist center. It was done with great care and small brushes.

Amitayus

Buddha of Infinite Life

Amitayus is one of the longevity Buddhas, and this is clearly seen in the translation of his Sanskrit name: amita = infinity, and ayus = existence, life. He is red in color, the color of sunset (which could symbolize the attainment of nirvana).

His hands are in his lap in meditation mudra holding a golden vase containing the nectar of Long Life, in which a wish-fulfilling tree grows.
Amitayus is a manifestation of Buddha Amitabha, one of heads of the Five Buddha Families.

Mandala of Avalokiteshvara (Tib.: Chenrezig)

The Mandala of Compassion

All Buddhas have their own Mandala. Such a geometric structure can be seen as a world of existence in which the Buddha lives. This is the mandala of Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of Compassion.

Mandala is a Sanskrit word, and its Tibetan equivalent is dkyil-khor, meaning ‘that which encircles a centre.’ A mandala is the palace, or celestial residence of the deity. The structure of this place models that of the ancient palaces in India.

Every aspect of a mandala structure has a deep meaning. All four directions have doorways that represent the Four Immeasurables: love, compassion, joy & equanimity.

In the centre hub of the mandala the seed syllable Hri is painted, which represents the Thousand-Armed Avalokiteshvara. This syllable can be seen as the sound manifestation of Avalokiteshvara, containing the essence of his enlightened qualities.
A fire wall and a ring of vajras surround the mandala and protect it from negative energies and conditions.

Female Buddha of Long Life

White Tara painted by Carmen Mensink

Status: Sold (but can be painted on commission)

The female Buddha White Tara is one of the main longevity deities in the Tibetan Buddhist pantheon.
Her meditation practice can be done to prolong your life and to overcome illnesses and other life-threatening obstacles. You can also offer an image of White Tara to a baby to wish that this newly born may have a long life ahead.

White Tara is often depicted together with Amitayus and Ushnisha Vijaya, and the three of them form the set of Three Buddhas of Long Life.

white-tara-thangka-by-carmen-mensink

This is a closeup of the artwork. It was painted by Carmen Mensink within 24hrs during a special ritual to generate a lot of Long Life energy for somebody in a very short time.

For this painting, Carmen started at 9am and finished exactly at 8am the next morning. It’s an amazing practice to keep your concentration high all the time, especially because the last thing one does is paint face.

The Seven Widdom Eyes

Tara has 7 eyes, 3 in her face and 4 on her hand palms and foot soles, as you can see from her drawings and sketches:

white-tara-drawing-thangka-white-tarawhite-tara-drawing-carmen-mensink

These seven eyes enable her to clearly ‘see’ all beings.

Thangka Art Courses on White Tara

Online White Tara Thangka Art Courses are offered regularly through the School for Tibetan Buddhist Art.
You can also check out the upcoming Thangka Art Courses on location in Europe, US and Asia.
