Green Tara Thangka by Carmen
Green Tara
This year, a special Buddha takes central stage that you can choose to work on!
Green Tara is the most famous female Buddha, and is the embodiment of Active Compassion. In addition she is absolutely fearless and extends her hand -like a mother to her child- to fulfill wishes and stands, with her right foot extended, ready to help where needed. There are many stories of people being rescued from difficult circumstances while reciting her mantra or invoking Tara’s name.
Green Tara is seen as one of the first emancipated women. When male practitioners urged her to pray for rebirth as a man -believing only men could reach enlightenment- she vowed instead: “Until samsara is empty, I will help all beings, but always in a female body!”
Advanced Students
More advanced thangka students are welcome to start painting one of their existing drawings, or continue to work on their artworks. Of course they can also choose one of the above mentioned subjects.
NOTE: Before the retreat, Carmen will be in touch with all participants about their chosen subject in order to prepare them. She can also advise you on what subject to choose. You will also receive a list with art materials to bring.

A beautiful hill town and pilgrim place, it was the birthplace of St. Francis (1181–1226), one of Italy’s patron saints. The Basilica of St. Francis is a massive, 2-level church, consecrated in 1253. Its 13th-century frescoes portraying the life of St. Francis have been attributed to Giotto and Cimabue, among others. The crypt houses the saint’s stone sarcophagus.
Expect a joyous week with a great group of people from all over the world!
This retreat offers you much more than just a beautiful drawing or painting.
The art of Thangka is a meditation in itself and creates joy and inner peace – something you will definitely experience this week.
