Mudras of Tara
Lecture + Drawing the Hand with Lotus

Thursday June 11th 2026 | 1-4PM
NY Insight Meditation Center | NYC

Enjoy a wonderful afternoon with renowned thangka painter Carmen Mensink from The Netherlands.

Mudras are special, graceful hand gestures used by enlightened beings, each with its own meaning.
In this afternoon workshop, you will learn how to draw the mudras of Green Tara of White Tara (both painted by Carmen), according to the Tibetan Buddhist tradition of thangka (scroll paintings).

Green and White Tara are the most famous female Buddhas; you could say they’re sisters. Green Tara, in short, stands for Active Compassion, and White Tara is the most famous Buddha of Longevity.

The workshop starts with a lecture where you’ll learn about Tara’s mudras and their meanings. Afterward, you’ll get to work on drawing them yourself, using the traditional ‘grids’ that have been passed down from teacher to student in Carmen’s lineage for centuries, and that include the correct proportions.

At the end of the afternoon, you’ll return home with a beautiful drawing and a wealth of new knowledge.

This workshop is suitable for everyone, including beginners with no drawing experience; Carmen will also guide you individually.
Use of all materials is included!

PS: If you’re hooked after this day, you have the chance to draw the entire Green Tara at the June 11-13-14 weekend retreat at Tibet House!
