BINTAN ISLAND – Extended Weekend Thangka Art Retreat, Jan. 11-14, 2018

Learn to draw the Buddha (Shakyamuni)

or

White Tara

In this extended thangka weekend retreat (starting on Thu) you will learn to draw Buddha Shakyamuni (the one most often referred to as THE Buddha) or White Tara according to traditional Tibetan Buddhist thangkas (scroll paintings).

It is held on the beautiful Island of Bintan (at the beautiful Bintan Agro Beach Resort, see the pictures at the bottom of this page), a short boat ride from the city of Singapore. Transfers, lodging, all meals and use of materials are included.

This special art retreat is suitable for beginners, medium and advanced students:

1)
Beginners will learn to draw the Face of the Buddha and
the complete Buddha Shakyamuni after that.
You don’t need to have any drawing experience! During the drawing sessions there’s a lot of individual guidance by Carmen.

The official name of the Buddha is ‘Buddha Shakyamuni’, and the Buddhist philosophy as we know it in its current form is based on his teachings.

2)
Students who have already drawn the Face of the Buddha in a previous course with Carmen will learn to draw
the complete Buddha Shakyamuni, including Lotus and Lion Throne, OR Buddha Shakyamuni with the Aura of the 6 Perfections

3)
Students who have already drawn Buddha Shakyamuni in a previous course with Carmen may also opt for White Tara.

The female Buddha White Tara (Tib. Drolkar) is one of the main longevity deities in the Tibetan Buddhist pantheon. Her practice can be done to prolong your life and to overcome life-threatening obstacles such as illnesses.
It is said that White Tara’s seven eyes enable her to clearly ‘see’ all beings in the realms of existence. A beautiful ritual is to offer a White Tara image to a newly born baby to wish that he or she may have a long life ahead.

If you want to draw White Tara please contact Carmen about it so she can prepare this for you.

The drawing of these enlightened images is like a meditation in itself, and creates a lot of joy.
Through a combination of drawing, slideshows, lectures and meditations you will learn all about the backgrounds and meanings of the Buddha and experience the meditational way of drawing. You will also learn the meaning of his mantra and learn how to work with it.

If you are a Buddhist practitioner, drawing the Buddha image significantly improves visualization in your meditations.
